Green Eco and Enviro Friendly Renovations - How, What and Why Green

Green and eco friendly often refers to our understanding of the need to reduce our carbon footprint and become more environmentally friendly citizens of the world in which we live.

We can accomplish this in so many ways by making small but meaningful changes and adjustments in our daily lives as we look to protect the ozone and reduce the amount of waste that currently occupies our landfills.  The use of sustainable, recycled and reclaimed products are becoming more commonplace as awareness grows.  Eco friendly can also result in dramatic savings when well thought out and planned.

I have a great starter home that was renovated with these principles in mind. Find out how it was done....

As most co-ops require 80% carpeting, this owner chose a product by Southwind Carpet Mills - which contains
50% recycled content and an Eco-friendly and non-staining backing due to recycled plastic backing (recycled plastic bottles) and Enviro Cel an Eco-friendly carpet backing

 Carpet Specs
  1. Made of rapidly renewable and recycled materials, over 50% green by weight.
  2. Manufactured with post-consumer recycled PET plastic.
Replaces over 90% of the petroleum based polymers with a bio-based polymer derived from domestically grown soybeans.

  • This smart kitchen remodel provides more prep space, an open floor plan, increased storage and seating, it also eliminated the need for a separate table & chairs, without sacrificing style.
  • Rather than rip and waste perfectly good cabinets, the owner simply matched and added to the existing cabinets for the expansion thereby eliminating waste and additional expense by reusing that which is salvageable.
  • The Silestone Quartz counters shown here contain 35% recycled content (recycled glass bottles)
  • Along with very low to no VOC paints and enamels which were used throughout the home (walls ceilings and cabinets)

Appliance Specs
  • A water filtration system was installed for the ice maker and drinking water (no more empty water bottles going to the landfill)
  • All new appliances chosen are Energy Star Rated to reduce energy consumption
  • All older appliances were donated, sold or recycled & reused in defference to our overflowing landfills.
Bath Features
  • The owners didn't forget about the Bathroom - low flow faucets and shower head were the first items to be upgraded here to reduce water waste ....
